August: A Time of Reflection and Growth
August is a time of reflection and growth, a reminder that every ending brings a new beginning. ~Sylvia Plath
As August arrives, we find ourselves in a season of transition-a month filled with reflection, mixed emotions, and heartfelt goodbyes. We say farewell to our beloved children and families who are moving on to primary school or relocating to new areas. While these goodbyes are often bittersweet, they are also filled with pride. It is an honor to have played even a small role in your child’s early years. With every ending comes the excitement of new beginnings, and we are grateful for the opportunity to build new relationships and lifelong friendships. August truly is a month of emotional shifts.
Navigating Transitions
With so much change in the air, children may begin to feel and express a range of emotions. They are told they will have new teachers, friends, and possibly attend new schools. They receive new supplies, and the pace of life seems to quicken. It is natural for parents to wonder if their child is “ready” for this next step.
Dr. Dan Gartrell, in his article Readiness: Not a State of Knowledge, but a State of Mind, reminds us that school readiness isn’t just about knowing letters and numbers. True readiness is about a child’s willingness to engage, confidence in their ability to learn, and a supportive environment that nurtures their development across all areas of development: physical, emotional, social, cultural, language, and cognitive.
